In 2016, the University of Missouri reported that the percentage of Missouri households experiencing hunger has more than doubled over the last ten years. Around one million Missourians either experience hunger or barely avoid it by eating nutritionally poor diets or depending on assistance programs.
The effects of hunger in our communities are widespread. When adults and children regularly lack necessary nutrition, incidents of chronic illness, developmental problems, and low performance in schools rise, along with greater loss of income, increased health costs, and higher dependence on state-sponsored social services.
Addressing hunger issues is not simply a chance to meet an immediate need by filling someone up. It is a chance to invest in long-term solutions for a number of social and economic challenges facing the people of Missouri.
What: Meals for a Million is a co-operative food packaging event for the entire St. Louis region with the goal of producing one million dried non-perishable meals to be distributed to starving people in the St. Louis area and international countries. Two nutritional formulas (Fortified Rice & Beans and Instant Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal) will be packaged in sealed pouches. Each sealed pouch provides a complete meal for six children (or four adults). The cost of each meal is approximately 25 cents.
When: August 25 (Saturday) packing from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and August 26 (Sunday) packing from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Event logistics volunteer support positions will also be available for sign up on the website. This includes volunteer positions with set-up on August 24 (Friday) from Noon until 6:00 p.m.
Where: St. Charles Family Arena at 2002 Arena Parkway, St. Charles, MO 63303
Registration: Sign up to serve at any of the packing table sessions or other needed event logistics positions. You will be able to select any volunteer position that is available at the time you register. You can also reserve a table for 8-12 participants for your family, friends, coworkers, or team.
Participants: Adults and children (ages seven and older) are welcome to participate in the packing event. (There will not be childcare provided at the facility on the day of the event.)
Participation cost: Costs to participate are $30 per person or $300 per table. These fees help pay for the meal ingredients, packing materials, and meal distribution. You can pay online via PayPal or mail checks payable to:

Recipients: Approved local area food banks/pantries and international countries will be the recipients of the finished meals. Complete this form to apply for recipient consideration for your organization.
Food Sanitation: Hair nets, beard nets, and sanitary gloves are required and will be provided. Sanitary gloves will be for those handling food ingredients/materials. For sanitation reasons, sleeveless shirts/tops are not recommended.
Food & Beverages: Outside food and beverages (water bottles, coffee, tea, soda, etc.) will not be allowed in the food packing area for sanitation reasons.
